It is with great pleasure that the Collectivité territoriale de Saint Barthélemy and the Wall House Museum present this new photographic exhibition to introduce visitors to this joyous artistic movement, which naturally took root and developed in an original way in Belgium at the same time as in Paris. While the key figures of the Surrealist movement in France are generally well known (André Breton, Max Ernst, Man Ray, Paul Eluard et al.), their Belgian equivalents, apart from Magritte, are often less well known in our country. The aim of this exhibition is to rectify this disparity, placing particular emphasis on what makes the Belgian movement so special: its joie de vivre and the good spirit of its participants. Benefiting from extremely generous loans from Pascal Retelet for Mariën's works, and from the Brachot collection for Magritte's, who have agreed to share their treasures with us, this exhibition has been mounted with the invaluable assistance of Madame Marie Godet, a doctorate in art history and specialist in the Belgian surrealist period, who curated the exhibition and wrote the texts and catalog notes. The Magritte photographs exhibited here come from the personal collection of Georgette and René Magritte, who kept them all their lives. The film Rencontres de René Magritte, 1942, by René Magritte and Paul Nougé was kindly loaned by the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique (Archives de l'Art contemporain en Belgique), for which we would like to thank them.
